The month of February is known as American Heart Month, which is a time to focus on staying heart healthy! Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, is the primary cause of death in the United States.[1] Cardiovascular disease can be prevented or managed by maintaining a lifestyle marked by healthy habits and choices, especially in regards to diet and physical activity.

In regards to physical activity, it is recommended that adults participate in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Pilates is a total body workout that centers on strengthening the core muscles of the body and can be an essential part of a heart-healthy fitness routine! The core muscles play an important role in developing correct posture, maintaining functional ability in daily tasks, increasing fitness and athletic performance, as well as achieving overall health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that Pilates-oriented exercise raises the heart rate, especially during intermediate-advanced workout sessions. Therefore, Pilates can provide a moderate cardio and resistance workout in a low impact manner while increasing strength, mobility, and balance. Including Pilates in your regular fitness routine will not only benefit your heart, but will also positively impact your mind and your body. We recommend that you show love to both your heart and your body by regularly practicing Pilates!
