Melanie's Story!

What prompted you to make that first call to HMR? 

I was fatigued and frustrated with my extra weight. I couldn’t find any clothes that were flattering or I wanted to wear. I had several ailments that were definitely weight related. It was a daunting time and I decided to be honest with myself and face my weight issue rather continuously denying it. 

 How would you describe your life now?

I feel like I have returned to a former version of myself and I appreciate and respect my weight loss. I am aware of old habits that led me to where I was and do not have plans to return to my pre-HMR weight. There isn’t any food that can taste better than how I feel now. I’m extremely grateful I made the call to start HMR! 

What would you say to anyone thinking about starting a weight and lifestyle change program?

I think it’s important to discard anything you think you know about weight loss and to not pay attention to all of the diets that are very common such as Atkins, Keto, etc.  Go into the program with an open mind and forget everything you think you know. Also, it’s crucial to listen to your HMR coach and report your weekly numbers accurately. They are here to help you be successful and will advise you what adjustments to make for the following week. Focus on what the options are available to eat and not the ones you cannot have with the program.  Be creative with salt free spices and other things to tailor food for your individual tastes.

 You and Steve did this together, so there was a built in buddy system.  What impact do you think the buddy system had on your success?

It was great that we did the program together. We held each other accountable and maybe were a little competitive at first. Of course he dropped weight faster than I did! So not fair!

What prompted you to make that first call to HMR?          

Both Melanie and I were not feeling good both physically and mentally and our health was beginning to suffer. Additionally, we looked at a photograph of us at a new years eve gathering and had our first realization as to how far we had let ourselves go. So we decided to join HMR together so that we could provide each other support and encouragement in our weight loss journey.

How would you describe your life now?

Life is completely different now, I am 60lbs lighter, full of energy, have been able to reduce my medications (no more acid reflux) and maintained my weight loss. Being lighter and having much energy has encouraged me to join Milestone Fitness which I attend 3-4 times a week and jog nearly 20 miles every week (unheard of 9 months ago).

What would you say to anyone thinking about starting a weight and lifestyle change program?

You have to be committed to a lifestyle change. The HMR program is not a diet plan, it is a lesson in understanding why we eat what we eat, changing eating habits, learning nutrition and being with other people having the same challenges and goals to succeed. 

You and Melanie did this together, so there was a built in buddy system.  What impact do you think the Buddy System had on your success?

The buddy system had a major impact in our success, as we encouraged and supported each other through this journey. There was also a certain level of competitiveness regarding who lost how much weight each week and I won most of the time.
